Back in the late 1800s, a young American by the name of Sylvester Howard Roper designed a steam-powered motorized bicycle and revolutionized the concept of transportation. Soon a combustion version was born and across the globe design modifications and improvements culminated in the early 1900s with a rugged and efficient form of transportation – and a legend was born.
The motorcycle of the early 1900s was tough, and fast, and for the next three decades it was sold to police departments and private citizens, businesses and the U.S. Military. Production raced to keep up with demand. Dealerships sprang up all over the country and in August of 1938 the first Black Hills Classic was held in Sturgis, South Dakota with a small audience for 9 racers. Two years later, another legend was born – the Sturgis Motorcycle Rally.
The Classic grew into a three day event that eventually stretched to five days, and then seven. Motorcycle riders and enthusiasts numbered into the hundreds, and then the thousands. By the early 1980’s the party had evolved into a full-on, city-wide, week-long festival and acres of what equated to wide open prairie just outside of Sturgis became home to resilient bikers roughing it in tents for seven days of stunts, racing, and parties. Rod Woodruff, founder and CEO, immediately saw the need, and ushered in the dawn of yet another legend… the Sturgis Buffalo Chip Campground.
Through the years, Rod and his staff have turned a legend into a tradition, one that reverberates through a motorcycling community that spans the globe. For one week each year, millions take to the streets on motorcycles, hundreds of thousands gather for the Sturgis Rally, and tens of thousands make the Buffalo Chip their home, experiencing something that can never fully be explained, living – for a couple of weeks at least – a truly legendary experience.
This year, that experience can be commemorated. Black Hills Gold Jewelry by Coleman has just completed a full collection of Sturgis Buffalo Chip Jewelry, handcrafted with the highest quality materials by local artisans.
